| Frequently named one the best places in
America to live, work, and play, this vibrant capital city and the neighboring
communities offer something for everyone. Located on an isthmus between
lakes Mendota and Monona, downtown Madison is literally surrounded by natural
beauty. From serene parks and endless bike trails to stimulating cultural
opportunities and world-class sporting events, Madison accommodates all
types of visitors.
In the summer, families will find plenty of fun and free or low-cost things to do throughout Greater Madison. Partake in a Saturday morning tradition and stroll through the Dane County Farmers' Market around the Capitol building, then tour the most beautiful state capitol rotunda in the nation. Visit the Henry Vilas Zoo (free) or discover the indoor tropical paradise at Olbrich Botanical Gardens. Cultural activities include six downtown museums, as well as a variety of performing arts venues. Visit downtown Madison's nationally recognized Overture Center for the performing arts, completed in 2004 through a generous $100 million private gift to the city. Madison is the site of many Frank Lloyd Wright buildings. In 1997 the stunning Monona Terrace Convention Center, which Wright envisioned in the 1950’s, was finally built over the waters of Lake Monona, and just one mile from the Alliant Center. Frank Lloyd Wright’s home and studio, Taliesin, is located 50 minutes west of Madison in Spring Green, Wisconsin. Just two miles from the Alliant Center
and across Lake Monona is downtown Madison. Anchored by the University
of Wisconsin campus and the State capitol, the downtown area has one
of the highest concentrations of restaurants and bookstores in the nation.
If you are interested in unusual ethnic fare, walk State Street, an eclectic
collegiate pedestrian mall connecting the University and the Capitol. There
are also many fine restaurants surrounding the Capitol. Don’t worry, there
are plenty of city parking ramps and ample street parking throughout the
area.
